Russian Brass Icon
Dimensions: 5.5 x 5.2 cm
Period: 19th century
This portative traveller icon depicting the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ is made in casted and finely incised brass. It has faceted knob at the centre of the upper rim. The subject is rendered in great detail and each of the represented figures is identified by inscriptions in Old Church Slavonic. The cross with crucified Jesus Christ is surmounted by the head of God the Father flanked by two angels. Standing near the cross are full-length figures of Saint Mary Magdalene and Mother of God on the left side, and of Saint John the Evangelist and Roman centurion Saint Longinus on the right side. Traditional elements of the iconography like Jerusalem’s wall in the distance behind the cross and skull set in stones under the cross marking the site of Golgotha are represented too.
According to the style and manufacturing technique the icon can be dated in the 19th century.
